Color Scheme Edits



Color Mood: Yellow blend

For the Color Mood photograph, I first blended two pictures together. The first one is of the softball team doing their cheer before the game, then blended it with the scoreboard at the end of the game. Finally I added a yellow hue over the whole photograph to add the sense of cheer and happiness to the photograph. (Edina won this game).

The next two photographs I enhanced certain colors in the pictures to add emphasis to certain things. For example, in the top photo, I made the grass more green, and in the bottom one, I made Cassie's eyes more blue, and brightened the color of her green jersey

For the two photographs above, I used the Gradient Tool in Photoshop to combine two different photographs into one. I really like the effect that this tool had on my photographs because it adds more interest to them.

 For the next three photographs I used the Gradient Map adjustment tool, this changes the hues of the photograph. In the first photograph, I used black and white, then reduced the opacity down so it color and still be seen as well as the black and white part of the photograph. In the second photograph, I used a colored Gradient Map and changed the blending style to darken. For the last photograph, I combined  the opacity and the blending mode to make the subject more interesting.




Solarization

 I really like this picture because it gives Chelese (the subject) a don't mess with me kind of look, and then when I added the solarization, it just makes it look unreal, and she has a really defined lining around her shoulders.


Half and Half Solarized



This is the same picture as before, but in stead of just changing the RGB curves to create solarization, I changed the Blue curve as well. Also, I made it so only Chelese is solarized and the background is normal.

Vintage, High Contrast and Pictorialism

For this photograph, I edited it to make it look vintage. I did this by using the curves, but instead of the normal RGB curves, I changed the red, green and blue separately. Also I added a warm photofilter, and reduced the saturation and vibrancy.



High Contrast

For this photograph, I edited it to get the high contrast look. This was achieved by using the RGB curves, boosting the vibrancy and saturation.



Pictorialism

Pictorialism is when you make a photograph look like it has been painted. I did this by lowering the vibrancy and saturation a lot, and then I added a Gaussian Blur.

Ethics Assignment

Credibility – Credibility to me, means that as a photographer, the pictures you take need to be creditable. Meaning that don't take a photograph and completely change it, or put it out of context, because when photographers do this, it makes people not believe what they see in photographs anymore.

Ethics – For the TIME magazine cover of OJ Simpson, they took OJ's mug shot, that doesn't look scary, and turned it into something even the bravest man in the world would fear. They did this by darkening the entire photograph, especially around his mouth, making him look guilty.

Ethic vs. Taste – The difference between Ethics and Taste is that Ethical issues have to do with lying and deception, while Taste issues have to do with sex, race, violence and blood.

Taste – When deciding on whether or not to publish a photograph or not, you need to think about why you want to publish it. Is it important to the story? And even if it is, you should have a good reason to do so. Pretty much the pros for publishing it should out way the cons.

Personal Ethics – The author who wrote the article determines whether or not to take or publish  a photograph based on if the subject is on the edge of dying, you should put down the camera, even if it would be worth a Pulitzer Prise, and help them. He feels that he would be morally obligated to do so.

Visual Lies – In the photograph, the Governor of Texas is seen sitting on a motor-cycle, with the words "WHITE HOT MAMA" right next to her. The only problem is, is that the only part of the picture that is the Governor is the head. That's it, the body belongs to a paid model, and they just used Photoshop her head onto the body. Making her seem more tough then she most likely is.

Changes to Photographs – I believe that it is okay to make changes to a photograph when the changes are necessary. For example, if you are taking a portrait of someone, you want the person to look flawless, so you may take out some marks and blemishes on the face, soften things up, but that is normally it. Yet some people decide to take things a step further and COMPLETELY change the looks of the person in the photograph.

Digital Manipulation – Photographs have been manipulated because someone wants the viewer to see what they want you to see, if something is in the way, or what not, things get manipulated. For example, the photograph of OJ Simpson's mug shot on the cover of TIME magazine, they wanted you to view him as evil and guilty, so they manipulated the photograph to give the viewer that perspective.

These principals of Ethics in photography apply to me and my photographs because I need to remember as a photographer, that my pictures need to be creditable, and tell the truth. Even though intense editing can be fun, it can also be very miss leading.

When someone edits photographs, it effects society and their perception of reality by making the viewer believe that all of it is real. Take a magazine cover, beautiful, perfect looking and extremely skinny models are all over. This gives society the idea that everyone who is beautiful needs to be dangerously skinny, and that's how you become successful.

Text and Image

This photograph is also from the first round of my theme photographs. For this assignment, we needed to add text to the photograph, that fit with the theme, and the photograph. The text I chose is a verse from YellowCard's song "Ocean Avenue"

The Beach



Sharpen (High Pass)

For the first part of our theme assignment, we had to take pictures over spring break. The theme I chose is "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness". This photograph is of footprints that were left in the sand from someone walking into the ocean.

 Since the original photograph wasn't that clear, I boosted the contrast and brightness, using the curves adjustment in photoshop. Then I did the high pass sharpen to add emphasis to the sand and to the footprints.

Rhythm Composite

This image is of my friends little brother, we call him "Baby Walk", while he is snowboarding at Hyland Ski & Snowboard Area.

For this photograph, I combined five different photographs together of Walker hitting the Trap-Box. I used layers and layer masks to make it easier for me to combine all of these photographs together. The one thing I struggled with, is the placement of all of the subjects, and making sure they were set in the right place.

My next assignment was to take portraits in artificial and natural lighting.

Chelese: Sepia Photo Filter



 The first picture is of Chelese, this was taken with article direct 3/4th lighting. For the editing process, I used the photo filter of sepia tone, to add a sort of tanish overlay of color over the photograph. I did this because I feel it makes the photograph have more of an edge to it, to go along with my subjects attitude in the picture







Jack: Surface Blur

  The next portrait is of Jack, this was taken with natural reflected side lighting. To create a reflected look on the subjects face, I used aluminum foil to reflect the light onto the shadowed part of his face. While editing this photograph, I used the healing tool to get rid of some scars that he has on his face, also I used the surface blur to get rid of blemishes, and imperfections. Surface blur also helps me blur things that I don't want to stick out, for example, I make sure the surface blur wasn't in effect on his eyes, hair, lips and jaw line.



Jack: Lighting Effect



For my final picture, I used Jack as my subject again, and this photograph was taken with back natural lighting. For the editing process, I created a lighting effect, called omni, This makes the source of the light stick out more, and give the rest of the photograph some deep shadows.

In this assignment, I had some struggles in the beginning of the editing process, with the surface blur. At first I couldn't get it to work just the way I wanted it to, but eventually I got it. My strengths were that my pictures turned out well.

White Balance

For this assignment, I had to change the white balance on my camera to bring out the "whitest" whites in the photographs. In the photograph with Fin sitting and looking out the window, I created a vignette around the subject to frame and create a border to add emphasis on the focal point. For the second photograph I edited, I changed the white balance to indescent, to bring out Buddy's white coat. Then I used curves to add contrast to the photograph to make the subject "pop".

I feel that the strengths of my photos come from my artistic eye, which gives me creative ideas. Yet from my strength comes my weakness, which is putting my ideas for my photographs into action. Sometimes I have great ideas for photographs, but it is hard to make those ideas look the way I picture them in my mind.

A Day in the Life of The Trusty Trib

After Editing

         For my 'Day in the Life" project, I decided to document a day in the life of my car, respectively named "The Trusty Trib". We were supposed to take pictures using different ISO's throughout the day. This picture was taken, from my car, at the entrance of Hyland Ski and Snowboard Area, in Bloomington, MN. The ISO for this picture is 64, and was taken during the day, so there was a lot of light in the picture. To edit it, I used Photoshop CS4, first, I cropped the picture, so that everything that was happening on the left side of the photograph isn't visible, due to the fact that it isn't the focus of this photograph. Then I clicked on auto color and auto tone to get rid of some noise and to clear up the photograph. After that I adjusted the brightness and contrast to enhance the shadows and help with bringing out some key colors. Lastly, I changed the vibrancy of the photograph to even further enhance the key colors. This photograph shows my strength that is the ability of being able to edit photographs well, but my weakness is choosing the perfect subject. 

Artist Statement

      I create art because it is a great way to express ones emotions and beliefs. Art is extremely meaningful to me because it gives one a way out of staying in the box, meaning that art gives someone an escape from their day-to-day/ cookie cutter lifestyle and step into a world of complete possibility and wonder. I have many inspirations when it comes to art such as: music, life, the sky, urban landscapes, rural landscapes, so pretty much I can find inspiration in almost anything. My inspirations are expressed in my work in many different ways, making it very hard for me to have a distinct way of expressing my inspirations. The way my inspirations are expressed change depending on the medium, my mood and the subject. The type of work that I have made so far consists of a clay peace sign being held by roots, an Andy Warhol Marilyn Monroe painting, freehand drawings of trees, film and digital photography and much more. I would love to make inspirational work that when someone sees it, they start to think, and go into deep thought while getting inspired themselves.

   

       The artist that I am featuring is Jared Levine. Jared's photographs consist of cars, snowboarding, skateboarding, urban photography, animals and senior portraits. For his photos, Jared uses photography editing software on the computer and his camera. I think that Jared's choice of materials and subjects are very creative, and how he is able to capture such amazing photos is amazing. He is truly an extremely talented photographer.
